Tip of the Month: Improving LDAP Performance

Nathaniel McCallum’s instructions for making Zenoss use LDAP or ActiveDirectory for Authentication and Authorization had a very important update from Scott Haskell. Users were reporting very slow UI response times and Scott narrowed it down to those installations using LDAP. He tracked down the Zope RAM Cache Manager and updated the documentation on how to greatly improve performance.

Congratulations are in order for Andrea ‘konsa79′ Consadori and Fabio Paracchini who were the winners in this summer’s “Submit a ZenPack Contest“. They will each be receiving an Asus Eee PC for their awesome ZenPacks. Tip of the Month: Getting XML Formatted Device Details

Zenoss provides a variety of tools to help you integrate it into other tools. Commonly used are the REST, XML-RPC and Python APIs. Another less-used option is XML. This can be very useful as a read-only integration point because you can get all of the data you need in a single simple transaction and good XML parsing libraries exist for all languages.

Tip of the Month: Creating Property-Driven Thresholds

Normally when you create a threshold, you have to choose the upper and/or lower limits. Sometimes you want these limits to vary considerably for different devices. It can be a lot of work to create many copies of the same template just so you can define different threshold values. However, there is a better way to solve this problem! (This tip was courtesy of Chet Luther a member of our client services team.)

Mercy Keeps Systems Alive With Zenoss

Zenoss Tip: Running Commands from the Zenoss User Interface

Zenoss allows commands to be run though the user interface. Zenoss comes with several built in commands such as ping and traceroute. This way you can select and run these commands without exiting to a terminal window and also see the output of commonly used commands. Commands run from the Zenoss UI can be run on a single device or also on a grouping of devices. To do this:

• Navigate to the Device or Device Group where you want to run the command (and where the command is defined).

• From the Device page menu, select Run Commands and then the command name you want to run.

The command is run and the output appears on the screen.

You can even execute scripts and other commands remotely. You can also run additional commands via SSH or remotely through the Zenoss system.

To define custom commands, from the Settings menu on the left navigational menu, select Settings and then click the Commands tab. Here you can use Tales expressions to define new commands or edit existing commands.
