Asus Eee PC

The results are in and it’s time to announce the winners of the Zenoss Submit a ZenPack Contest. There were a whole lot of exceptional entries over the past few weeks. We had a tremendous response and there were 25 entries, more than doubling the number of Zenoss Community ZenPacks available for download.

The winners have been chosen and they are Zenoss Community members Andrea Consadori and Fabio Paracchini.

SQL Server 2000/2005 Performance ZenPack http://www.zenoss.com/community/projects/zenpacks/sql-server-performance

Contributed by Community member Fabio Paracchini, this ZenPack is for monitoring SQL Server Performance and works with SQL 2000 and SQL 2005. Highlights include graph the most significant counters for SQL Server:

  • Cache Hit Ratio

  • Locks requests per second
  • Lock wait time
  • Full table scans per second

We are very pleased to announce that the latest stable release of Zenoss, version 2.2.3 is now available for download. The Zenoss team has been hard at work nailing down defects (80+ closed!) and 2.2.3 should be one of our finest releases yet. While this is primarily a maintenance release, a lot of work has gone into testing and improving upgrades and installations.

Normally when you create a threshold, you have to choose the upper and/or lower limits. Sometimes you want these limits to vary considerably for different devices. It can be a lot of work to create many copies of the same template just so you can define different threshold values. However, there is a better way to solve this problem!

For this example we’ll create a property-driven threshold for the standard FileSystem template. This will allow us to setup a single threshold on the FileSystem template in the /Server device class and use a custom property at the device or even device class level to control its behavior.

First Step: Create the custom property

  1. Go to /Devices
  2. Click on the menu and choose More -> Custom Schema
  3. Add a property:
    • Label = Maximum file system utilization
    • Name = cThreshMaxFileSystem
    • Type = int
    • Default = 90
    • Visible = True

Second Step: Create the property-driven threshold

  1. Go to /Devices/Server
  2. Click on the Templates tab
  3. Click into the FileSystem template
  4. Delete the existing Free Space 90 Percent threshold
  5. Add a new threshold named nearly full:
    • Select usedBlocks_usedBlocks from the data points
    • Set the max value to:
      (here.totalBlocks) * (here.cThreshMaxFileSystem / 100.0)

Now you can go to the custom properties/schema of any device class or device and set what the percentage at which your file system threshold will trigger just by overriding the cThreshMaxFileSystem property.

42 Internetworks is doing a bake-off between Zenoss and some other vendors. In February they did a review of Zenoss Core and gave us a lukewarm reception. I suspect that’s because they didn’t have enough time and context to really dig into Zenoss (more on that later).
As those of you who are fans of Douglas Adams know the answer to everything is 42.

“internetworks” is the word internet was derived from and it’s defined as connecting two or more distinct computer networks together. These computer networks include everything managed by Information Technology (IT) - servers, applications, desktops, routers, switches, wireless devices, etc. Hence the name 42Internetworks.

While they endeavor to be the answer for all things Internetworking Zenoss endeavors to be the answer to networking management and monitoring.
The reason I mention this. Is that recently 42Internetworks stated that they haven’t gotten much user feedback from actual users on the bake-off from anyone but software vendors.

A couple weeks ago, we posted a thread about doing an unofficial bake-off. Since then we’ve only received emails and comments from vendors - no users. So this begs the question, are there any users reading this blog out there. If not, then maybe doing the bake-off isn’t that valuable.

Well let’s change that. 42Internetworks is looking to share good information on network monitoring and management.

We have thousands of successful community users who could help share their extensive systems management experience.

I encourage you to go to the 42Internetworks and help inform their bake-off.

One of the benefits of Zenoss Core is that you can monitor devices agentlessly via SNMP. Sometimes that isn’t ideal so Erik Dahl led a session at BarcampESM on the potential need for an open management agent to supplement agentless monitoring. [Click on the image to watch the video.]
